Detran-RJ driver licensing regulatory changes
Overview
The Rio de Janeiro State Transit Department (Detran-RJ) has implemented several regulatory changes regarding driver training and licensing in accordance with federal resolutions.
In early September, the department authorized approximately 120 autonomous driving instructors to provide practical training directly to candidates. These instructors are permitted to operate for one-year renewable terms, provided all lessons are recorded in the official system for monitoring and safety compliance.
Following this, Detran-RJ expanded its policies to allow candidates to use automatic transmission vehicles for both practical lessons and driving exams. Under these rules, Driver Training Centers can register automatic vehicles, and candidates who complete their training in such vehicles will receive licenses without special transmission distinctions. This follows a previous June update that removed the parallel parking maneuver from practical exams.
