Deutsche Bahn’s policy to prohibit alcohol consumption in station halls and on platforms will take effect on 15 October 2026 at all 5,400 German stations. Pilots in Cologne, Munich, Hamburg and Frankfurt have already shown fewer assaults, less litter and a calmer weekend atmosphere. CEO Evelyn Palla framed the ban as a safety measure; sealed bottles may be carried in luggage and bars, restaurants and on‑board services may continue selling alcohol. Enforcement will be carried out by DB security staff, with the Bundespolizei intervening only if a person refuses a place‑restriction. Violators can be removed and repeat offenders may receive a permanent station ban. The German police union (DPolG) backs the ban but stresses that roughly 3,500 additional security personnel and AI‑driven video analysis will be needed to detect aggression consistently. The rollout follows a recent violent attack on a DB security officer and has prompted calls from the police union and SPD for more resources. A traveler survey in Recklinghausen showed strong public support, while homelessness‑aid groups warn the ban could push vulnerable people out of stations without complementary housing or addiction services. Critics also caution that enforcement “by eye” may be lax, risking a “paper‑tiger” outcome. In August 2026 the Hamburg Senate broadened its local prohibition to large parts of the St. Georg district, allowing possession of alcohol and exempting the annual Christopher Street Day parade. The German police union continues to demand extra staff and modern monitoring tools to ensure the nationwide ban is effective. A phased implementation of the ban is scheduled to begin on 1 September 2026, with prohibitions taking effect at Berlin Hauptbahnhof, Berlin Gesundbrunnen, Kiel, and Braunschweig.
