Deutsche Bahn to enforce alcohol ban at all stations
Entities: Heiko Teggatz · Deutsche Polizeigewerkschaft · Bundesarbeitsgemeinschaft Wohnungslosenhilfe · Deutsche Bahn
Overview
Deutsche Bahn’s policy to prohibit alcohol consumption in station halls and on platforms will take effect on 15 October 2026 at all 5,400 German stations. The rollout follows pilots that have been running since April at Cologne and at other hubs such as Munich, Hamburg and Cologne, where officials observed fewer assaults, less litter and a calmer weekend atmosphere.
CEO Evelyn Palla framed the ban as a safety measure, saying that an “alkoholfreie” environment means “less violence and less rubbish.” The rules allow sealed bottles or cans in luggage and permit bars, restaurants and on‑board services to continue selling alcohol. Enforcement will be carried out by DB security staff; violators may be removed and repeat offenders could face a permanent station ban. The federal police will intervene only if a person refuses a place‑restriction.
The German police union (DPolG) endorses the nationwide ban but warns it cannot be enforced without roughly 3,500 additional security personnel and AI‑based video analysis to detect aggression. Social‑service and homeless‑help organisations caution that the ban may push alcohol‑dependent homeless people away from the protective environment of stations, potentially exposing them to greater risk elsewhere.
Critics continue to label the approach a “paper‑tiger” because enforcement will rely on “eye‑measure” judgments, and they call for complementary housing and addiction‑support policies to address the underlying issues.
