Development of eco-friendly agricultural crop protection

Overview

Researchers are developing ecological alternatives to synthetic fungicides and antibiotics to protect crops from fungal and bacterial diseases.

Initial efforts focused on combating gray mold (Botrytis spp.) through biodegradable films made from corn starch and silver nanoparticles, as well as testing ozonated grape seed oil to protect cherries. These methods aim to reduce postharvest fruit loss and chemical exposure for workers.

Subsequent developments include the creation of clay-based nanocomposites that encapsulate essential oils from oregano, thyme, and clove. These materials are designed to combat ‘bacterial fire’ (Erwinia amylovora) by adhering to flowers. Field tests indicate that oregano-based formulations can reduce bacterial presence at levels comparable to traditional antibiotic treatments, potentially mitigating antimicrobial resistance in the agricultural sector.
