Development of SweepLED hidden camera detector
Overview
Researchers from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), the National University of Singapore, and Singapore Management University have developed SweepLED, a low-cost smartphone attachment designed to detect hidden cameras in private settings such as hotels or rentals.
Unlike conventional detectors that may produce false positives by reacting to shiny surfaces like metal or plastic, SweepLED uses an LED case to sweep light from multiple directions while the smartphone camera remains stationary. An AI model then analyzes the resulting light deformations caused by the internal structure of a camera lens, such as the sensor and aperture.
In laboratory tests involving 30 common objects, the system demonstrated approximately 94% accuracy and could identify potential cameras in less than five seconds per object. The device is designed to be highly accessible, with manufacturing costs for the LED case estimated at less than $7.
