The devotion to Saint Rose of Lima remains a significant cultural and religious pillar in Peru and across Latin America. Born Isabel Flores de Oliva in 1586, she was a member of the Dominican Third Order who lived a life of intense prayer, asceticism, and service to the poor and sick. Recognized as the first saint of the Americas, she is the patron saint of Peru, Latin America, the Philippines, and the West Indies. Modern celebrations of her feast day occur on August 23 and August 30. While the universal Catholic Church moved the liturgical commemoration to August 23 following Second Vatican Council reforms, August 30 remains a national holiday in Peru. In Quives, traditions include Holy Mass at her sanctuary and the practice of placing letters containing prayers and intentions into her well. Recent festivities in 2026 highlighted the widespread nature of these traditions. In Peru, the holiday served as the patronal day for the National Police (PNP), with religious ceremonies, processions, and institutional tributes held in regions such as Chimbote, Ica, and Loreto. In Tacna, former members of the Civil Guard commemorated 69 years of their institution. In the Sanctuary of Santa Rosa de Lima, hundreds of devotees attended a mass presided over by Fray Alejandro Maquera Calderón, followed by a procession of the saint’s image. The celebrations also included a ‘Serenata Criolla’ organized by Radio Santa Rosa TV to celebrate Peruvian identity through music. Regional celebrations extended to Argentina (Purmamarca), Venezuela (El Palotal), Brazil (Jaguarari), Mexico (Guanajuato), and Paraguay, where the Bishop of Caacupé exhorted police officers to serve with humility and integrity. In Argentina, Governor Carlos Sadir participated in festivities in Los Lapachos.
