Diesel truck retrofitting to electric power

In late July 2026, Belgian firm TROVA began offering a full‑truck repowering service that removes diesel powertrains and installs electric motors, transmissions and modular battery packs while retaining the original chassis. The company highlighted material‑saving and CO₂‑reduction benefits, as well as lower operating costs achieved through reduced energy use and maintenance, and it partnered with MegaDepot to provide charging and energy‑management services.

A week later, U.S. startup Revoy announced a different retrofitting concept: a battery‑powered “backpack” that slots between a tractor’s fifth wheel and its trailer, delivering electric torque to an auxiliary axle while the diesel engine remains in use. The unit, equipped with a 575 kWh lithium‑iron‑phosphate battery, can provide 322–402 km of electric‑only range and regenerative braking, extending the life of existing semis without the expense of full electrification. Revoy’s solution was still in development with no rollout date.

Together, the snapshots illustrate a growing market for converting existing diesel freight vehicles to electric or hybrid operation, ranging from complete chassis conversions in Europe to modular add‑on systems in the United States.
