Digital environmental monitoring initiatives in Spain
Overview
Spain has introduced various digital and technological initiatives to enhance environmental monitoring and territorial planning. In Andalusia, the Regional Ministry of Sustainability and Environment and the Environment and Water Agency launched the Forest Information Statistical Viewer (Indifo) and the Environmental Constraints Statistical Viewer (Indica) to help analyze forest data, protected species, and flood zones. Additionally, the Municipality of Blanca in Murcia implemented a web platform using real-time sensors to monitor air quality and noise levels.
Technological applications have expanded to include artificial intelligence and satellite imagery. In Algeciras, a student project titled ROV Okamurae utilizes Sentinel-2 satellite images, robotics, and AI to track the spread of invasive Asian algae along the Andalusian coast, while also using a remotely operated vehicle to monitor water and air quality in Getares bay.
