Digital consumption patterns are shifting as users express increasing fatigue with highly curated social media environments. Initial observations indicate a decline in idealized, artificial content in favor of authenticity, as the pressure to project constant joy—described by psychologist Lara Ferreiro as the ‘tyranny of happiness’—is linked to anxiety and a disconnect from actual emotional states.

This fatigue has evolved into broader cultural movements, including a resurgence of nostalgia for mid-2010s aesthetics and a growing preference for analogue experiences. To reduce screen time and escape algorithm-driven content, younger demographics are increasingly turning to tangible alternatives such as digital cameras, iPods, and physical stationery.

The influencer model is also undergoing a transformation. Creator Fabiana Sevillano and others suggest a saturation point where audiences are rejecting repetitive formats and excessive ‘postureo’ (posing) in favor of more genuine connections.

Recent developments highlight a paradox of hyper-connectivity and increasing social isolation. While technology facilitates constant communication, many interactions remain superficial, leading to a phenomenon described as ‘accompanied loneliness.’ This lack of authentic connection is linked to mental health challenges, as users often exchange brief messages or emojis rather than meaningful emotional exchanges.

In Spain, connectivity issues are further complicating this landscape. A study by Netquest for DE-CIX indicates that 32% of Spaniards have experienced ‘digital exile,’ leaving their homes to find more reliable internet connections in cafes or businesses. This instability affects streaming services like Netflix, YouTube, and Twitch, causing user anxiety. Consequently, there is a growing trend toward moving away from text-based communication in favor of video calls to establish more immediate and genuine connections, particularly in dating contexts.
