Digital literacy and youth engagement in Indonesia

Overview

In Indonesia, leaders and educators are addressing the challenges posed by the digital era, specifically regarding the influence of social media and the necessity of digital literacy.

Concerns have been raised regarding how platforms like TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram allow content creators and ‘buzzers’ to potentially manipulate public opinion through narratives rather than facts, placing pressure on traditional media. To counter the spread of hoaxes and misinformation, educators are emphasizing the importance of teaching students to verify content objectively to maintain national unity.

This focus on digital literacy extends to the political sphere. As younger demographics, including Gen Z and millennials, represent a significant portion of the electorate, officials are urging youth engagement in social and political life. Leaders have highlighted the need for young people to navigate digital spaces critically to combat misinformation, such as deepfakes, which increasingly impact political discourse.
