June 2026 data confirmed a modest improvement in Germany’s labour market, with unemployment falling to 2.936 million and the rate slipping to 6.2 %. Vacancies rose to 648 000 and short‑term unemployment affected about 26 000 workers. By late July the upward trend in unemployment among university graduates continued. The graduate unemployment rate reached 3.3 % in 2025, the highest level in a decade, while in the Rhineland town of Dormagen 6.1 % of academics aged 25‑40 were unemployed, slightly below the town’s overall 6.5 % rate. The rise has been steady since 2022, marking a shift from near‑zero unemployment for graduates that prevailed up to 2024. Sectoral shifts kept total employment near 45.6 million. Industry shed roughly 185 000 jobs over the past year, but health‑care, education and public administration added about 181 000 positions. Only six of the 38 occupational groups examined recorded growth, three of them in health, with dentistry postings up 25 % and demand also rising for dental assistants, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, operating‑room assistants, optometrists and emergency‑room staff. Seasonal summer jobs remained stable, dominated by production, retail, childcare and logistics. Analysts linked the broader slowdown to higher energy prices after the Iran conflict, prompting a revision of Germany’s 2026 GDP forecast to 0.5 % and pushing inflation to 2.9 %. Real wages turned negative despite a nominal 2.8 % increase in advertised salaries. Public debt stood at about 63 % of GDP, well below the euro‑area average.
