Digitalization trends in Spanish SMEs

Overview

Spanish small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are navigating a transition toward increased digitalization, driven in part by the upcoming requirement for mandatory B2B electronic invoicing. This shift necessitates a move from manual processes to specialized management software.

However, a significant gap has emerged between perceived and actual digital maturity. While approximately 74.2% of Spanish SMEs have reached a basic level of digital intensity, only 5.6% achieve a very high intensity level. Despite 79% of these companies believing they are highly digitalized, only 9% meet the criteria for true digital maturity, which involves the active use of artificial intelligence, cloud-based critical processes, and advanced cybersecurity. Experts have characterized this discrepancy as a “digital mirage,” noting that many businesses mistake the use of generic software for structural technological transformation.

Recent data suggests that adoption rates vary significantly by sector. In human resources, the Barometer of Human Resources Digitalization by Auria HR indicates that 83% of companies admit they have not yet reached an optimal level of digitalization. While AI is being integrated into recruitment and training, its structured use in HR processes is still incipient, with only 37% of departments utilizing it and just 17.8% making decisions based entirely on data analytics. A primary obstacle cited by 47.3% of companies is a lack of time.

Conversely, the marketing sector shows higher integration. A report by Kolsquare and B2B International finds that approximately 87% of Spanish companies use AI in influencer marketing campaigns, surpassing the European average of 84%. Furthermore, 93% of Spanish brands intend to increase investment in this area over the next twelve months.
