Dinosaur footprint discovery in Thailand

Overview

The Thailand Department of Mineral Resources confirmed the discovery of six carnivorous theropod footprints in Udon Thani province. Located within the Phu Hin Chom That–Phu Phrabat National Park, the tracks are preserved in the sandstone of the Phu Phan Formation and date back approximately 120 million years to the Early Cretaceous period.

The footprints, which feature three pointed toes, measure roughly 29 centimeters in length and 26 centimeters in width. Researchers estimate the dinosaur was approximately 6.3 meters in total body length with a hip height of 1.42 meters, a size comparable to the previously identified Siamotyrannus isanensis. While the specific species has not been confirmed, the tracks are attributed to a bipedal meat-eater.

The discovery was initially prompted by social media photos shared by a tourist. In response, authorities are working with the Ministry of Culture to implement protection measures under the 2008 Fossil Protection Act to safeguard the site from erosion and visitor damage.
