Diplomatic dispute over Gaza aid worker airstrike

Overview

Following an April 2024 airstrike on a World Central Kitchen convoy in the Gaza Strip that killed seven aid workers, including Polish citizen Damian Soból, the Israeli military concluded its investigation. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) determined the strike resulted from “mistaken identification of the convoy” and “severe operational errors” after soldiers believed they were facing militants. While the IDF dismissed certain officers and issued reprimands to various commanders, Israeli authorities stated there were “no grounds to suspect the commission of a criminal act.”

The Israeli Embassy noted that the convoy had not informed the IDF regarding the use of private armed security or changes to its agreed-upon route.

In response to the decision to discontinue criminal proceedings, Poland summoned the Israeli Ambassador in Warsaw. The Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed “great disappointment” and a “critical assessment” of the outcome, demanding full cooperation and materials to assist a parallel investigation by the District Prosecutor's Office in Przemyśl. Poland has also called for compensation for the victims' families. Similar diplomatic actions were taken by Australia following the death of an Australian citizen in the same incident.
