Disability inclusion and care initiatives in Mexico
Overview
The Teletón initiative in Mexico has evolved from a 1997 fundraising campaign into a social movement focused on the rights and dignity of people with disabilities. Through its network of Child Rehabilitation and Inclusion Centers (CRIT), the program provides specialized medical, physical, and psychological support to improve autonomy and address societal barriers.
Building on these efforts, a new proposal titled ‘Propuesta de Atención a la Discapacidad Motriz en México 2026’ has been introduced by FUNSALUD and several partner organizations. This initiative aims to coordinate the government, private sector, and civil society to address the specific needs of the 3.5 million people living with motor disabilities in Mexico.
Citing demographic projections that suggest an increase in mobility difficulties due to an aging population, the proposal advocates for a biopsychosocial approach. It emphasizes expanding access to rehabilitation services, long-term care, prosthetics, and assistive technologies to preserve functional autonomy.
