Disability sports challenges and activities in Varese

Overview

Local organizations in Varese, including Polha Varese and Associazione Medico Sportiva Varesina, have identified critical obstacles facing sports for people with disabilities. Key issues include a shortage of volunteers due to an aging demographic, a lack of accessible facilities, and the absence of public sports medicine services.

As the season progresses, specific athletic developments have emerged. The Handicap Sport Varese wheelchair basketball team has undergone a significant roster overhaul and appointed Damiano Airoldi as head coach ahead of their season start.

In ice hockey, the Varese Gladiators recently faced the undefeated Aosta Gladiators. HC Aosta secured their seventh consecutive victory with a 6:4 win at the Acinque Ice Arena. Despite Varese managing to equalize four times after trailing, former Varese player Dylan Ghiglione proved decisive for Aosta by scoring a late brace, including an empty-net goal in the final seconds. This victory maintains Aosta’s perfect record in the IHL, keeping them at the top of the standings alongside Caldaro.
