Discontinuation of paid terrestrial TV in Europe

Overview

Paid terrestrial television services are being discontinued in Latvia and Hungary due to shifting consumer habits and economic challenges.

In Latvia, telecom company SIA Tet announced it will cease providing paid terrestrial television on January 1, 2027, following the expiration of its service licence. Chief executive Uldis Tatarčuks attributed the decision to a decline in demand as viewers move toward digital platforms, alongside a lack of “economically viable terms” in upcoming public tenders. Tet plans to offer alternative internet-based TV services to affected customers.

Similarly, in Hungary, One Magyarország will discontinue its paid subscription terrestrial service, known as Földfelszíni TV, effective November 30. The service, which utilized DVB-T2 technology, struggled to maintain mass popularity, peaking at approximately 100,000 subscribers. While the paid model is being phased out for business reasons, free-to-air broadcasting for 10 channels will remain accessible via the terrestrial network.
