Discovery of German WWII submarine in English Channel
Overview
Divers have located the wreck of a German World War II submarine in the English Channel, approximately 30 kilometers off the coast of England at a depth of 70 meters.
Initial reports identified the vessel as U-672, though subsequent details identified the wreck as the Type VII C model U-627. The submarine is believed to have sunk in July 1944 following an attack by the British. All 52 crew members survived the sinking and were rescued by British forces, later becoming prisoners of war.
The discovery follows decades of uncertainty caused by clerical errors in historical military records. Due to a mapping mistake, the vessel was recorded as being roughly 74 kilometers away from its actual location, with some records even misidentifying the site as a First World War sailing ship. Identification was aided by technical features, including an early snorkel system, remnants of the Aphrodite radar deception system, and a historical pig emblem on the conning tower.
