Discovery of rare amber nugget in Romania
Overview
A 3.45 to 3.5 kilogram amber nugget, valued at approximately 1 million euros, was used for decades as a doorstop in a home near the village of Colți in southeastern Romania. The specimen was originally found in a local stream by an elderly woman who mistook it for a common stone.
Following the woman's death, an heir investigated the item's origin and had it professionally evaluated. Experts from the History Museum in Kraków, Poland, identified the specimen as rumanite, a rare variety of Carpathian amber estimated to be between 38.5 million and 70 million years old.
Due to its rarity and scientific significance, the nugget has been classified as a national treasure of Romania. It has been under the care of the Buzău County Museum since 2022.
