Dismissal of ICC Prosecutor Karim Khan

The International Criminal Court (ICC) dismissed Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan following allegations of sexual misconduct involving a junior lawyer. The decision was reached by a majority of 82 of the 125 member states.

While Khan denied wrongdoing and announced his intent to contest the dismissal, the removal follows a period of intense political and media pressure. This pressure was partly linked to Khan's pursuit of arrest warrants for Israeli leaders, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, regarding alleged war crimes in Gaza. Reports indicated that while allegations of misconduct were used to question his motives, the warrants in question had been prepared prior to the accusations surfacing.

The dismissal has drawn various international reactions, including warnings from UK officials regarding potential funding and membership withdrawals, as well as responses from Israeli diplomatic representatives. Existing ICC arrest warrants remain in force, and the process to elect a successor is expected to continue into the following year.
