Diving incidents in Lake Attersee
Overview
In early September, specialized divers Markus Sturm and Manfred Führmann completed a high-risk recovery operation at Lake Attersee, Austria. The divers descended to approximately 160 meters to retrieve the wreckage of a small aircraft that had crashed during a flight school session, an accident that killed a 19-year-old student and a 24-year-old instructor.
Later in the month, a separate diving accident occurred at the Ofen site in Attersee. A 57-year-old Dutch diver died at the scene following an uncontrolled emergency ascent after encountering difficulties at a depth of approximately 80 meters. During the rescue operation, medical teams also treated a female diver for shortness of breath.
