Doctolib AI clinical data initiative

Doctolib announced in July 2026 the creation of a clinical artificial‑intelligence laboratory, backed by a €20 million investment and a three‑year schedule starting in August 2026. The lab, formed with partners Inria, Inserm and the University of Paris Cité, aims to produce decision‑support tools, analyse care pathways and automate tasks such as consultation notes. Models will be trained on the health and demographic records of more than 50 million French users, whose data are pseudonymised but remain technically linkable. The company uses an opt‑out consent model, stating compliance with CNIL methodology, sparking debate over GDPR compliance and the adequacy of default enrollment.

A second announcement later that month detailed the same three‑year AI research programme, specifying that pseudonymised data will be stored for up to five years and used to predict disease progression, suggest examinations and flag emergencies. Human‑rights groups, including the Ligue des droits de l’Homme, criticised the approach, arguing that pseudonymisation does not eliminate privacy risks and that the default consent mechanism is insufficient. They also highlighted that the data will be hosted by Amazon, placing it under United States jurisdiction and raising additional privacy concerns in France.
