Dog attacks involving children in Crete

Overview

A series of dog attacks involving children has been reported in the Crete region of Greece.

In late August, a 12-year-old boy was injured in Heraklion after a large male mixed-breed dog escaped its handler. The victim sustained multiple bites to his hip, back, and left side, but remained in stable condition. Authorities arrested the woman walking the dog and issued administrative fines to both her and the owner. Local reports indicated the animal may have previously exhibited aggressive behavior.

In mid-September, a separate incident occurred in Rethymno, where a four-year-old girl sustained multiple bites to her hand during an attack in the Estavromenos area. Local authorities have initiated investigations into the circumstances of the attack.
