Dolphin welfare concerns in Cancún
Overview
Nine dolphins held at the former Ventura Park in Cancún are facing severe health challenges following the facility's closure due to irregularities. Assessments by Mexico’s Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) have identified chronic issues among the animals, including corneal inflammation, vision loss, mouth ulcerations, and dental abrasion. One dolphin, Mincho, was noted to have a carcinoma on his tongue.
While Profepa has observed improvements in water quality and life support systems at the site, the dolphins' medical conditions remain a significant concern. Due to their health status, three of the nine dolphins are considered unlikely candidates for relocation. Authorities are currently working with specialists to evaluate the possibility of transferring the remaining six specimens while administrative proceedings regarding the facility's non-compliance continue.
