Dominican Republic-China trade imbalance

Overview

The Dominican Republic has experienced a widening trade deficit with China. Between 2019 and 2025, the deficit reached US$27.755 billion, driven by a significant increase in imports from China while exports remained largely stagnant. In 2025, imports from China totaled US$5.381 billion against only US$309 million in exports.

By 2026, the Dominican Republic’s export economy saw growth in the agro-industrial sector, which accounted for over US$10 billion of the country’s US$14 billion in total exports. This growth is attributed to global trends such as ‘friendshoring’ and demand for shorter supply chains.

Despite this sectoral growth, the trade imbalance with China persists. In the first seven months of 2026, China was the Dominican Republic’s second-largest supplier but only its eighth-largest export destination. The ratio of imports to exports with China stood at approximately US$13.60 for every dollar exported. Dominican imports from China are primarily manufactured goods, such as electronics and vehicles, while exports to China consist mainly of raw materials, tobacco, and medical devices.
