Overview

In early July, the Dominican Republic fire department released a map identifying 200 zones in the capital at risk of landslides, marking a step toward better geologic‑hazard preparedness.

The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, under Minister Paíno Henríquez, then launched an intensified forest‑fire campaign, coordinating defence forces, environmental protection services and agricultural agencies to broaden surveillance, boost patrols and apply penalties under Law 64‑00 for arson and other environmental offences. Officials stressed that most fires are human‑caused and threaten forests, water supplies, biodiversity and firefighter safety.

On 30 July, the ministry issued Resolution 0030/2026, temporarily prohibiting unauthorised agricultural and waste burns until 31 August, while exempting activities covered by existing permits. It reported that over 90 % of recent fires stem from human actions and cited successful containment of blazes in Gajo Escondido, Sabana de San Juan, Corocito, Limoncito and El Portillo. Two inter‑institutional coordination meetings brought together the defence ministry, armed forces, migration, agriculture, public works and the private forest sector to strengthen joint response and preventive patrols.

Later in July, the ministries inaugurated the inter‑institutional “Compromiso Ambiental 2026” operation across six national parks—Los Haitises, Valle Nuevo, Sierra de Bahoruco, José del Carmen Ramírez, Armando Bermúdez and La Humeadora. The operation, led by the Servicio Nacional de Protección Ambiental with support from the army, navy, air force and other agencies, targets illegal occupation, logging, burning, poaching and related crimes. Surveillance, patrols and intelligence work were further intensified, and arrests were made for alleged violations of environmental legislation. These actions are part of the National Forest Fire Prevention Season that began in February 2026, aiming to protect forests, water sources, biodiversity and firefighter safety.
