In the Dominican Republic, authorities have focused on increasing law enforcement and labor oversight. Customs officials at Las Américas International Airport seized over US$600,000 and Colombian pesos from a Colombian national attempting to travel to Panama without declaration. Concurrently, the Ministry of Labor reported efforts to combat child labor through inspections and social support. Following these enforcement activities, the Dominican Senate has moved forward with legislation to prohibit the importation of goods produced through forced labor. Authored by Senator Félix Bautista, the bill establishes a verification regime to identify and prevent the entry of products manufactured under conditions such as debt bondage, physical or psychological violence, or the withholding of identity documents. The Senate approved the bill during a special session in Bonao, Monseñor Nouel, to commemorate the province's 44th anniversary. The legislation now moves to the Chamber of Deputies. Senator Bautista stated the measure is intended to align Dominican competition standards with nations like Mexico and Argentina. Economically, the law aims to protect human rights and ensure fair market competition by preventing artificial labor cost reductions. By implementing these standards, the Dominican government seeks to request a reduction in U.S. tariffs from 12.5% to 10%, a move that could potentially save exporters approximately USD $182 million annually. During the same legislative session in Bonao, the Senate also approved the National Seed Law project and a measure to declare casabe as Intangible Cultural Heritage of the Dominican Republic.
