Dominican Republic MLB prospect management

Overview

In the Dominican Republic, the management of Major League Baseball (MLB) prospects has faced both financial and administrative challenges. Coaches have reported that parents of young players often pose a financial risk by spending significant portions of pre-agreement bonuses on luxury items before deals are finalized, despite the risk that such agreements can fail due to injury or performance issues.

Concurrently, Dominican officials, including the National Baseball Commissioner and the Directorate General of Migration, have engaged with MLB academy executives to address logistical hurdles. These discussions focused on improving permit and documentation systems to facilitate the entry of foreign trainees, many of whom come from Venezuela and Mexico, into the country’s training complexes.
