Dominican Republic motorcycle regulation and security
Overview
In the Dominican Republic, authorities are addressing significant issues regarding motorcycle regulation and vehicle security. As of March 2026, data from the National Institute of Transit and Land Transport (Intrant) revealed that only approximately 1.5% of the nation’s 3.7 million motorcycles had licensed operators. To combat this high level of informality and the circulation of undocumented vehicles, Intrant began collaborating with the Ministry of Interior and Police and other agencies on a regularization plan.
Following these regulatory concerns, security forces intensified efforts to combat rising crime. Large-scale joint operations involving the Armed Forces, National Police, and the Dominican Navy were launched, resulting in the inspection of nearly 20,000 people and over 10,000 motorcycles. These operations were prompted by statistics showing that motorcycles are the primary target of vehicle theft, accounting for 92.5% of the 2,120 reported vehicle thefts in the first half of 2026.
