Dominican Republic police officer fatalities and incidents

Overview

A series of incidents involving Dominican National Police officers has prompted investigations by the National Police and the Public Ministry.

In late August, a traffic accident in La Altagracia province resulted in the death of 22-year-old officer Michael Isaías Manzueta Pérez and left another officer critically injured after a motorcycle collided with an SUV. While authorities investigated the circumstances, the driver of the vehicle surrendered to police.

By early September, investigations expanded to include two separate fatal incidents. In Sabana de la Mar, officer Ángel Manuel Castro Santana died after being struck by shotgun pellets during a shift change, leading to the arrest of officer Sergio Moreno Fabián. In Santo Domingo, officer Edwin De los Santos Guerrero was detained following the fatal shooting of a 14-year-old girl. These events have drawn scrutiny toward officer conduct amid ongoing police reform efforts.
