Dominican Republic public infrastructure development
Overview
In the Dominican Republic, the government has focused on large-scale public works and infrastructure development. Initially, the Ministry of Tourism invested approximately RD$3,500 million into the recovery of boardwalks, beaches, and public spaces across several coastal regions, including Santo Domingo Este, La Romana, and Samaná.
Subsequently, the Dominican government announced the allocation of RD$2,000 million in funds recovered through anti-corruption efforts to the construction and rehabilitation of 40 sports facilities. These projects, spanning 15 provinces, aim to provide accessible spaces for youth, senior citizens, and people with disabilities, addressing infrastructure deficits in 26 municipalities. Key developments include the construction of 22 covered multipurpose facilities and the Arena Fernando Teruel in La Vega, which carries an estimated individual investment of RD$842 million.
President Luis Abinader stated that the initiative aims to promote transparency and serve as an example for the youth, noting that diverted public funds directly prevent the development of community infrastructure. To ensure accountability, a citizen oversight commission is overseeing the execution of these projects. Bidding processes have reportedly already resulted in savings of RD$125 million.
Building on these efforts, the government is evaluating a new regulatory framework to institutionalize the strategic management and direction of state projects. This initiative seeks to establish common standards to improve planning, transparency, and the efficient execution of public works and investments. The total investment for the ongoing sports projects is now estimated at RD$2.232 billion, including additional funds managed by the Presidency.
