Dominican Republic heat wave strains electricity grid

Entities: Dominican Republic · INDOTEM · El Limón · Instituto Nacional de Aguas Potables y Alcantarillados (Inapa) · Instituto Dominicano de Meteorología (Indomet)

Overview

The extreme heat wave in the Dominican Republic has driven electricity demand well beyond normal levels, with national consumption peaking above 4,400 MW and a recorded high of 4,330.8 MW on a single night in July. Rolling blackouts now last up to seven hours across Greater Santo Domingo, affecting districts such as Bajos de Haina, Los Mina, Villa Mella, Pedro Brand, as well as neighborhoods previously cited (El Limón, Cayenas, Amalia). Residents continue to protest with tire‑burning, street blockades and cacerolazos.

Distributors attribute the outages to the surge in air‑conditioner and fan use. Authorities are still negotiating the interconnection of El Limón with the Santa Bárbara substation in Samaná, a plan overseen by Samaná governor Teodora Mullix and the local distributor El Progreso. The water‑supply damage in the Santa Capuza river remains unresolved, leaving hundreds without potable water. The overlapping electricity and water crises, compounded by record temperatures and Sahara dust, keep public frustration high and the risk of further peaceful demonstrations across multiple provinces elevated.
