Double Fine studio independence and Keeper release
Overview
Following a separation from Microsoft due to restructuring at Xbox, the game development studio Double Fine regained independence and retained its intellectual property. This transition resulted in the layoff of approximately one-quarter of the studio’s staff, though leader Tim Schafer characterized the period as a ‘creative awakening’. To fund future projects, the studio launched a Kickstarter campaign with goals including Amnesia Fortnight and a potential development of Brütal Legend 2.
On September 3, 2026, Double Fine released its adventure and puzzle game, Keeper, on PlayStation 5. Previously available on PC and Xbox Series X|S, the surreal, dialogue-free game features a walking lighthouse in a post-human world. The PlayStation 5 version includes DualSense controller support. Along with the launch, the studio introduced a ‘Psychedelic Mode’ visual filter and a permanent price reduction for the title across all platforms.
