DRC infrastructure and digital connectivity expansion

Overview

The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is pursuing several large-scale infrastructure and digital connectivity initiatives. The government has entered into a memorandum of understanding with the Republic of the Congo to construct a 1.5-kilometer road-rail bridge across the Congo River, connecting Kinshasa and Brazzaville. This project is supported by the African Development Bank and Africa50 as part of the African Union’s Programme for Infrastructure Development in Africa.

In the digital sector, the DRC is working to expand connectivity across its 145 territories to achieve a digitized nation by 2030. This includes efforts to reduce the urban-rural digital divide through public-private partnerships. Additionally, the DRC is discussing a fiber-optic interconnection project with the Central African Republic. This proposed link would connect the Central African Republic to international submarine cable systems, such as 2Africa and WACS, via a landing station in Muanda, providing the landlocked nation with more diverse terrestrial routes to the internet.
