DRC state authority and security stabilization

Overview

In early August 2026, provincial leaders in the Democratic Republic of the Congo emphasized efforts to restore state authority and promote development. In South Kivu, Governor Jean-Jacques Purusi returned to Uvira following a national forum aimed at fostering inter-institutional cohesion. Simultaneously, Governor Joseph Moïse Kambulu N’konko returned to Kasaï Central, pledging financing for provincial projects and highlighting urban resilience efforts.

By mid-August, the central government reported progress in pacifying areas affected by Mobondo militia violence, specifically in Kwango, Maï-Ndombe, and near Kinshasa. Minister Delegate for Defense Éliezer Ntambwe stated that 72 villages had been pacified and 146 weapons recovered. The government has implemented a social reintegration strategy, sending 596 former militia members for training in Haut-Lomami province. Ntambwe attributed the unrest to land disputes and noted that while major roads are now safe, certain political actors may be attempting to destabilize the Grand Bandundu region.
