DRC women's rights and survivor support initiatives

Overview

In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, efforts to support women’s rights and survivors of violence have expanded through both organizational unification and government inspection. In late September, the Ligue des Féministes de la RDC was launched in Kinshasa with support from the UN MONUSCO Gender Section to unify feminist movements and strengthen advocacy for gender equality.

By mid-October, the Minister of Gender, Family, and Children, Micheline Ombae Kalama, inspected a multisectoral service center in Kinshasa to evaluate care for survivors of gender-based violence. Minister Kalama emphasized that rehabilitation must include socio-economic reintegration, stating, “It is not enough to only denounce or arrest the rapist, we must also rehabilitate the victim.”
