Dressmaker indie game Steam launch and performance

The tailoring simulation game Dressmaker, developed by Cozy Lives and published by Free Lives, launched on PC and Mac via Steam on September 21. The game allows players to engage in garment creation through fabric selection—including cotton, linen, wool, silk, and velvet—sketching, pattern placement, cutting, and sewing with vintage-style machines. Players can choose between fulfilling custom orders from townspeople to build reputation or designing original pieces for a boutique shop window.

Prior to its release, the title had accumulated over 400,000 Steam wishlists. Following its launch, the game achieved significant commercial success, entering the Steam top 10 best-sellers list and outperforming several major AAA titles. Within days of release, it reached a peak of more than 16,000 concurrent players and maintained an ‘Overwhelmingly Positive’ rating from users, supported by over 2,400 reviews.

Recent reports confirm the game has rapidly ascended to the Steam Top 10 best-sellers list, momentarily outperforming major AAA titles such as Diablo IV and Marvel Rivals. The boutique management simulator, which includes mechanics allowing for the potential to ‘sabotage’ clientele, maintains an ‘Overwhelmingly Positive’ rating, with approximately 96% of over 2,000 reviews being favorable.

Its popularity has sparked social media discussions regarding the viability of niche, highly optimized indie titles compared to large-budget productions. Users have specifically noted the game’s appeal to creative audiences and its ability to run effectively on older hardware. Due to high demand, developers have confirmed plans for a Nintendo Switch port, though no release date has been set. A launch discount of 10% was made available on Steam through September 29.
