Drought and water crisis in Tangerang

Overview

Following hydrometeorological studies and BMKG forecasts of a prolonged dry season driven by El Niño, the Tangerang municipal government identified three drought-risk zones across eight districts. Initial mitigation efforts included the deployment of water-tank trucks by the TNI Koramil, the use of armored water cannons by police, and the preparation of water tanks and hydrant inspections by public works departments.

As the dry season persisted, the situation escalated in the Tangerang Regency. The Sumur Karang Reservoir in Kronjo dried up completely, removing a vital irrigation source for local agriculture. The Tangerang Regency Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) reported that approximately 43 hectares of rice crops across 12 sub-districts and 24 villages are now at risk of harvest failure. Furthermore, a clean water crisis has emerged, affecting roughly 6,260 individuals across 13 sub-districts.
