Drought conditions in eastern and central Germany

Overview

Severe drought conditions have impacted large portions of eastern and central Germany. Initially, Brandenburg reported that approximately 70 percent of its territory was under severe drought, with soil moisture deficits reaching depths of 1.8 meters. The most critical areas were identified in the south and east, including Berlin, Potsdam, and Lusatia, posing risks to agriculture, groundwater recharge, and forest stability.

As the situation persisted, the drought extended across Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Thuringia, affecting between 55 percent and 70 percent of their land areas. In Saxony-Anhalt, the CDU parliamentary group proposed building weirs on the Elbe and Saale rivers to stabilize groundwater and protect water supplies, though environmental groups expressed concerns regarding ecological damage. Despite occasional light rainfall, deep soil moisture levels remain critically low due to high evaporation rates and insufficient precipitation.
