Drowning incidents and search operations in Indonesia

Overview

In early August 2026, search and rescue operations in Indonesia resulted in the recovery of two drowning victims in river environments. In South Sumatra, a 60-year-old truck driver was found in the Baung River, while in Riau, a 13-year-old boy was located in the Siak River following a three-day search.

By late August, search operations shifted to coastal and ocean environments. In Ambon, authorities concluded a seven-day search for a 25-year-old individual swept away by waves in Hutumuri Village, reporting that no signs of the victim were found. Simultaneously, in Aceh Besar, search teams including police and local fishermen were deployed to locate a 19-year-old student who was swept away by strong currents while swimming at the Lhok Keutapang tourist area.
