Drug trafficking activity in Chiang Rai

Overview

Authorities in Chiang Rai have conducted significant drug interdiction operations near the Thai-Myanmar border.

In early September, border patrol officers seized 410 kilograms of ketamine in the Mae Sai district. The drugs were found in 17 black sacks hidden in a forested area near Jong village following a tip regarding organized smuggling. While the substance was recovered, the suspects escaped the scene.

Later in the month, a violent encounter occurred in the Mae Fah Luang district. Thai soldiers from Task Force Chao Tak engaged in a firefight with a group of 15 to 17 individuals near Ban Pang Mahan. The exchange of gunfire resulted in the deaths of nine suspected smugglers. Following the clash, authorities recovered 272 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine. Intelligence officials indicated the narcotics likely originated from Myanmar’s Wa State and were being transported by ethnic Lahu hill tribe members.
