Drug trafficking and cultivation in Vienna

Overview

Legal and law enforcement actions regarding narcotics in Vienna have recently focused on both large-scale cultivation and street-level distribution.

A trial has begun at the Regional Court concerning a massive illegal cannabis plantation located in a 3,000-square-meter warehouse in Vienna-Liesing. Prosecutors allege the site produced hundreds of kilograms of cannabis and housed nine workers. While authorities seized over 700 kilograms of cannabis and thousands of plants during raids, the defendants have denied criminal charges, with counsel claiming the operation was a ‘legal research business’.

Concurrently, the Vienna police Street Crime Combatting Task Force has conducted operations targeting public drug sales. These efforts resulted in several arrests at Reumannplatz and Keplerplatz involving the sale of marijuana, cocaine, and ecstasy. These incidents involved various foreign nationals and led to the seizure of narcotics and cash.
