DTC driver strike in Delhi

Overview

A strike by Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) contractual drivers has caused significant disruptions to public transportation in Delhi. Initially, the strike entered its third day, affecting approximately 6 million daily commuters and forcing reliance on more expensive transport alternatives. In response to the shortage of buses, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation increased train services to accommodate passengers.

As the strike extended to six days, the focus shifted toward government negotiations. Transport Minister Pankaj Singh directed officials to consult the labour department regarding driver demands, which include higher daily wages, the implementation of a basic dearness allowance (DA), medical facilities, and overtime pay. Protesters, specifically those employed by private companies contracted to operate electric buses, are also seeking to be moved directly onto the DTC payroll. The DTC Karamachari Ekta Union has threatened further agitation, termed a ‘kaam band’, starting September 28 if their demands remain unmet.
