Summer 2026 road works continue to disrupt traffic across the Netherlands and Belgium. The Merwedebrug (A27) remains a critical concern due to structural weaknesses in the bridge’s steel arch. Following a July 18 ban on vehicles over 3.5 tonnes, authorities conducted enforcement operations to target non-EU vehicles. While heavy vehicle traffic was reduced by over 97 percent, approximately 500 trucks still attempted to cross daily. In late September, the Merwedebrug underwent a scheduled closure for asphalt replacement. The bridge has since reopened ahead of schedule after a new, thinner layer of asphalt was applied, reducing the structure's total weight by approximately 400 tons. This weight reduction is intended to ensure safe use while a new bridge is constructed adjacent to the current one. However, safety restrictions remain: a maximum speed limit of 70 km/h is enforced, and trucks and touring cars are prohibited from using the bridge. In October, major disruptions are expected in Limburg and Gelderland. The Urmonderbaan (N294) will face multiple closures between October 14 and November 2 for the demolition and reconstruction of an A2 central viaduct, including full closures between Sittard and Urmond. Additionally, the Urmond exit (48c) towards Eindhoven will close from October 23 to October 26. In Gelderland, the N325 will be completely closed for one month between Beek and Nijmegen to improve a dangerous intersection, potentially affecting 20,000 motorists daily. Near Rotterdam, the A15 highway will undergo asphalt replacement between the Maasvlakte and Vaanplein junction from October 16 to October 26, with intermittent closures on the lane heading towards Maasvlakte/Europoort and expected weekday delays of up to one hour.
