Dutch organized crime murder sentencing

Overview

The Amsterdam Court of Appeal has issued increased sentences for six members of a criminal organization linked to the 2019 murder of lawyer Derk Wiersum. Wiersum was killed near his home while assisting a crown witness in the Marengo liquidation trial.

In addition to the murder, the court addressed an October 2019 incident in Utrecht involving a severe assault with blunt weapons. While a lower court had previously classified the Utrecht event as attempted heavy assault, the appeals court reclassified it as attempted murder. The defendants, who were involved in reconnaissance and providing vehicles for the Wiersum attack, received sentences ranging from 30 months to 11 years and three months, exceeding the original demands of the Public Prosecution Service.
