Dutch telecom promotions and pricing disputes
Overview
Dutch telecommunications providers, including Odido, KPN, Ziggo, Delta, and VodafoneZiggo, continue to engage in aggressive promotional activities for mobile, internet, and TV services. These offers frequently include discounted bundles, gift vouchers, extra data, and high-value hardware such as tablets, smart TVs, or Sonos speakers.
Recent comparisons of subscription models suggest that while Sim Only plans are often more cost-effective for mid-range devices like the Samsung Galaxy S26, bundled subscriptions may offer better value for premium hardware like the iPhone 17 Pro. KPN has specifically targeted switchers with monthly rates of €35 for fixed-term contracts and incentives such as Philips Ambilight TVs.
However, these promotional strategies have drawn criticism regarding price inequality. The Consumentenbond has reported that long-term customers of KPN, Odido, and VodafoneZiggo are paying between 25% and 30% more than their initial rates due to annual inflation adjustments, while new customers benefit from significantly lower introductory prices.
In response to these findings, Consumentenbond director Sandra Molenaar has called for political intervention and legislation to prohibit such pricing disparities. While the Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM) will require providers to inform customers about their contract status and available rates, consumer advocates argue this places an undue burden on individuals, particularly the elderly and vulnerable groups.
Separately, Odido’s subsidiary, BEN, has faced reports of billing disputes, with customers alleging difficulties resolving overdue payment claims despite providing evidence of timely transactions.
