EAEU regional cooperation and Armenian domestic developments
Overview
During meetings of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has advocated for the ‘Trump route’, a proposed railway project connecting the Persian Gulf to the Black Sea. Pashinyan suggested the project would serve as a “landmark event” for Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Iran by integrating Armenia into international networks. While Iran has expressed concerns regarding its strategic interests, Pashinyan continues to push for the removal of administrative and transport barriers to facilitate Armenian exports.
Domestically, Pashinyan has shifted focus toward social welfare and infrastructure. The government has proposed transferring property to the ‘Otevan’ NGO to establish a state social housing fund for refugee resettlement. Additionally, the Prime Minister has inspected new school buses in regions such as Aragatsotn and Tavush, establishing strict conduct standards for drivers.
Political and security tensions persist. Opposition figures, including Levon Zurabyan, have accused Pashinyan of undermining Armenia’s spiritual security through cooperation with foreign religious organizations. Security concerns also remain high following an incident in the Syunik region, where an Azerbaijani soldier reportedly entered a private home in Shaki and opened fire, injuring a woman and children; criminal proceedings have been initiated regarding the matter.
