Early grape harvest in Navarre due to drought

Overview

Drought conditions in the Basque Country and Navarre have significantly accelerated the grape ripening process. This has resulted in an uncharacteristically early harvest, with some wineries beginning approximately 15 days earlier than usual.

In Navarre, producers in the Ribera region are among the first to start, with white varieties such as Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc being the first to be picked. Enologist Pablo Pavez of the Principe de Viana winery noted that this represents the earliest harvest recorded in recent history. In central Navarre, timelines are advanced by 15 to 20 days, while black grape varieties like Merlot and Tempranillo are expected to be harvested in southern Navarre starting in early September.
