Earthquake impact on Colombian healthcare infrastructure
Overview
Following a violent earthquake in western Colombia, healthcare facilities in the region have reported significant damage. In Pereira, the Hospital Universitario San Jorge estimated losses of approximately $32 billion pesos, including $2.5 billion pesos in damage to biomedical and clinical equipment. Despite structural issues affecting certain floors, ICU cubicles, and operating rooms, the hospital remained 80% operational to manage emergency arrivals.
In response to the seismic event, the Colombian government allocated 4,386 million pesos to strengthen the health sector in Valle del Cauca. These funds are intended to support strategic hospital services and address infrastructure damage, specifically targeting the oncology functional unit at the Hospital Universitario del Valle ‘Evaristo García’ (HUV).
Health authorities in Valle del Cauca have reported no increase in earthquake-linked diseases and stated there is no evidence of an epidemiological emergency. Officials have advised residents in debris-heavy areas to wear masks to prevent respiratory irritation from dust.
