Earthquake relief and response in Colombia
Overview
Following a double earthquake in Venezuela, Bogotá’s USAR COL-1 team received decorations from Mayor Carlos Fernando Galán and fire chief Paula Ximena Henao Escobar for rescuing an 11-year-old boy and providing technical assessments.
As seismic activity continued, a 7.4 magnitude earthquake prompted relief mobilization. In Bogotá and Cundinamarca, 42 shopping centers were established as humanitarian aid collection points. The District Institute of Recreation and Sport postponed certain anniversary celebrations, such as the ‘Paseo bajo las Estrellas’ Night Ciclovía, in solidarity with those affected. Additionally, the Ecuadorian government opened aid centers in Guayaquil and Sangolquí to receive donations for the earthquake-affected populations in Colombia.
